How to Protect Your Skin From the Sun with Natural SPF Oils?

Published on:

Summer and sun protection are parallel terms. There are several natural oils that come with natural sun safeguard properties and cold pressed Sesame Oil and Coconut Oil are two names which fall in this category. These Natural SPF oils are fundamentally chemical free sunscreens and are completely safe to use.

Loaded with nutrients, cold pressed Sesame oil and Coconut oil come with natural SPF of 4-10, which means they shield the skin for about 45 minutes of sun exposure by blocking at least 75% of ultraviolet radiations.

Sesame oil or “Til Tailum” has been mentioned in Ayurveda for its multiple properties. In fact, it has been claimed as the best ayurvedic massage oil for its natural health benefits. This amber coloured, nut flavoured oil is acquired from the seeds of “Sesamum indicum” plant and it contains plenty of nutrients that are good for skin health. It is rich in minerals, fatty acids along with linoleic acid, which provide high levels of moisture and prevents dehydration in the skin. It is also rich in vitamin E, D and B complex which makes it effective enough to reduce scars and pigmentation on the skin.

Another natural SPF oil is virgin Coconut Oil as sunscreen. Together with SPF 4-10, it contains antioxidants that help to protect the skin from harmful radiation from the sun as a natural sunscreen.Ideally the low amount of SPF is not sufficient for a long day in the sun, so it can be applied again after a regular interval.

Coconut has been mentioned with high regard in Ayurveda. Its sweet taste makes it nurturing for body and mind. It balances excess Pitta (heat element) and gives a cooling effect. It also balances the Vata (air) element by its nourishing and moisturizing properties. People with Kapha imbalances shouldn’t overuse coconut oil.

Why choose natural oils instead of chemical sunscreens

More often than not, natural oils help shield the skin from the harmful UV rays, especially when the sun exposure is not too intense. Also regarded as a natural alternative to sunscreen, Virgin Oils with natural SPF can protect your skin from oxidation and free radicals along with UV radiations. Most of the chemical sunscreens, that are readily available in the market, contain oxybenzone which when absorbed by the skin and bloodstream, has adverse effects on the health. Another reason for using alternate natural oils over chemical sunscreen is that while the oils of Almond, Coconut and Sesame protect the skin from sun damage and tanning, they also nourish, heal and soothe the skin.

It’s rich in Vitamin A, B1, B2, B6 and E, apart from several essential fatty acids. This pure fresh oil nourishes both skin and hair.

Cold pressed Sesame and Coconut oils are the best ayurvedic body massage oils for infusing herbs. Sesame oil, being warm in nature, gives very good results for Vata skin, which is usually normal to very dry. For Pitta skin, which is usually sensitive and reacts easily to heat and sun exposure, Coconut oil is best to use.

While staying out for 20 mins, in the sun without sunscreen, usually does no major harm to the skin, it is however recommended to always wear a natural sunscreen to keep the skin protected. This summer use the natural SPF oils to protect your skin from the damaging effects of sun, whilst you achieve soft, supple and radiant skin.
