The Onset of The Vedic Winter—Shishir Ritu

Published on:

With each season known as Ritu in Ayurveda,  certain changes take place in the environment and consequently special types of food and exercise are specifically advised according these seasonal changes. This process is known as Ritucharya. Through the knowledgeable practice of Ritucharya,  in accordance with the season, we can maintain the harmony of the Tridosha (Vata, Pitta and Kapha) and avoid several skin and body related concerns. Ayurveda has rules and regimens (Charya), regarding diet and lifestyle to acclimatize the body without altering its processes.

Presently,  we are in the midst of Shishir Ritu.

What is Shishir Ritu?

Mid-January to mid-March is considered as Shishir Ritu (Winter), which incorporates the months of Magh and Phalgun. This season is associated with dryness and dehydration, which leads to an accumulation of Kapha Dosha and the aggravation of Vata Dosha. According to Ayurveda, physical strength is at its peak during this time and it is the ideal period to build strength, stamina and immunity in our bodies..

What should one eat during the Winter?

What should one eat during the Winter?

  • During Shishir Ritu, foods that are alkaline in nature and have a sour taste are preferred. This includes Amla, Lemon and Starfruit.
  • Cereals, pulses, wheat or gram flour products, rice, corn, and others, are advised. It is also great to include Ginger, Garlic, Haritaki, Pippali, Sugarcane and Milk based products in the diet.
  • Alcohol consumption during this time can cause excessive dehydration. One can opt for Red Wine or molasses-based Rum. Avoid consuming spicy food, such as Black Pepper and astringent vegetables including Capsicum, Bitter, Broccoli, Cauliflower during this Ritu.

Skincare guidelines for the Winter:

In Tasyashitya chapter of Charaka Samhita, it is said “Tasya Shitadiya Ahaarbalam Varnascha Vardhate. Tasyartusatmayam Vaditam Chestaharvyapasrayam,” which means “the strength and complexion of a person is enhanced if they know the suitable diet and regimen for every season and practice it accordingly.” Cold weather and low humidity levels result in dry air, which then dries the skin. Here are a few steps you can follow for a renewing radiance:

Abhyanga or application of oil to the whole body, is an excellent way to nourish the skin. Use the Rose  & Mandarin Extra Rich Body Massage Oil or any of our new Body Massage Oils formulated with pure Ghee and follow by bathing with water.

Utsadana or Body scrubs help remove dead cells that accumulate on the skin because of dryness. Our range of freshly made Ubtans and rich Body Polishers are extremely beneficial for exfoliation and unlike other exfoliators, do not strip your skin of its natural moisture.

Shiroabhyanga or a head massage with lukewarm oil  helps stimulate the hair follicles and provide intense nourishment. Our Head Massage Oils helps in effectively reducing dryness and adds shine a to lifeless hair during the Winter.

Moisturizers:  Our selection of moisturizers adds nourishment in the skin. These should be applied immediately after bathing, whilst the skin is damp and has  better ability to absorb. A buttery texture smooths dry skin and seals in hydration for long hours. Use our Bath & Shower Oils before applying the Body Cream to leave the skin soft, supple and delicately fragranced for long hours. These are light and do not leave a sticky residue, unlike other oils.

Sunscreen: The skin needs protection from the UVA/UVB rays of the sun, at all times. Our Everyday Sun Protection Fluid has light hydrating texture that has SPF 50|PA++ and lends a sheen to the skin without any residue. It is formulated with fresh and tender Coconut Water to hydrate the skin. Use it daily after cleansing, toning and moisturizing.

Masks: Nourishing and hydrating masks are a blessing for dry and dull skin as they lend an instant glow. Our Tejasvi Emulsion is ideal for such concerns. Massage it well on the face and neck for 10-15 minutes; the longer the better. Use hot water to dip your fingers, occasionally, while massaging. Dab off excess emulsion with a warm towel and follow with a splash of cold water. Spritz chilled Facial Tonic Mist to finish. Our Ayurvedic Sheet Masks also help to achieve visibly rested and vibrant skin.
