In the Fervour of Karwachauth

The fourth day of the Hindu month of Kartik heralds meticulous fasting for a full day (until the arrival of the moon) by wives for the health and longevity of their husbands. As the fasting wives adorn themselves as brides on this day, beauty rituals become both a significant part of this day as well as of the preparations that precede. Mother-in-laws give their daughter-in-laws the traditional “Sargi” before the day of the festival,which comprises of mithai, dry fruits, and gifts – all of which are symbolic of an Indian bride- from jewellery, to sindoor, to makeup and henna. Husbands and other relatives are also given the opportunity to shower gifts on the fasting women as a way of celebrating their efforts and the fervour of this special occasion.
