Castor Oil: Ayurvedic Properties and Effect On Ayurvedic Doshas

Castor Oil, also known as Eranda Tailam in Ayurveda has Tikta (bitter taste) and Madhura Rasa (sweet taste) and other potent Gunas or qualities including Guru (heavy), Ushna (hot), Sara (flowing), Balyam (strengthening). It intrinsically portrays Ushna Virya (hot potency) and Katu Vipaka (pungent metabolic taste). Being heavy and oily, it pacifies the Vata (air) and Kapha (earth and water) Doshas.

The Ayurvedic properties explain that the sweetness gives nourishment while the pungency and astringency help clear away natural toxins. Its cooling nature also helps ease Pitta Dosha (fire), and promotes hair growth. Castor Oil is cooling for the hair follicles. In Ayurveda, it is said that excess heat causes hair loss by damaging the hair follicles. The nourishing aspects of Castor Oil strengthen roots of the hair.
