Introduction

Does the daily hustle and bustle of your hectic life tend to make you overlook your hair? The ancient science of Ayurveda advocates that healthy hair is a sign of a balanced Dosha. Often, tension in the scalp or fatty deposits blocks circulation, drying the natural sebum production and therefore (literally) starving the hair of natural moisture, which causes it to shed quickly.

Your hair needs proper care and the outer radicals like dust, dirt, grime and pollutants can cause external damage to hair. Fret not! We have hair care tips and solutions to take care of your tresses!

Why Onion Oil for hair growth?

While it may have a pungent smell and make you teary-eyed, research has shown that Onions have been successfully used for hair treatments and can help treat hair loss. Jam-packed with essential nutrients like Vitamin C, Vitamin B9 and B6, and Potassium, these bulbous vegetables are known to strengthen hair roots, foster speedy hair growth and lend lusciousness to your tresses. When used in the form of an oil, it can serve as a potent remedy for your troubled scalp due to its anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antioxidant-rich properties. (1)

In fact, in Ayurvedic tenets like Sushruta Samhita and Bhava Prakash, the bulbs, the seeds and the leaves of Onions have been widely known to cure urinary tract and oral infections — and also, diabetes. (2)

How to use Onion Oil for hair

Massage is your answer to relieve stress and release tension as it improves the scalp’s (and hair’s) blood circulation levels — and frees the hair roots of dry sebum. Onion Oil (for a head massage) can be used both ways – as it is or in the form of a hot oil treatment.

Hair Massage Therapy

To use Onion Oil without heating it, take a few drops of the oil into your palms and gently massage it onto your scalp for at least 5-7 minutes. Leave it to rest for 30 minutes and wash it off with a mild shampoo. Do this 1-2 times a week for improved results.

Alternatively, as a hot oil treatment, mix Onion Juice into a carrier oil (like that of Almonds or Olives) and heat it using the double-boiler method to ensure the maximum retention of nutrients. Apply the mix onto your scalp, all the way down through the length of your hair and leave it to rest overnight. Wash it off the next day, using a mild, SLS/SLES-free hair cleanser. Follow through with a nourishing conditioner of your choice.

Onions Oils and Benefits

Controls hair loss and encourages re-growth

Rich in Sulfur and Potassium, Onion Oil has been known to strengthen split ends and prevent breakage, and firm hair strands. It helps maintain the pH of the scalp and hair roots which facilitates the growth of new hair follicles.

DIY Remedy 1: In a blender, add ½ a cup each of chopped Onions and Curry Leaves, and blend to form a fine, dry paste. Add this paste to a pot. Next, add 200 ml of Pure Virgin Coconut Oil (which will act as a carrier oil) to the mix, and heat on a low flame. After 5-10 minutes, increase the flame and let the mixture come to a boil. Reduce the heat again and let it simmer for 15 minutes until you notice that the oil’s colour begins to darken. Leave it overnight to rest. Strain the mixture, the next morning, in a sieve and pour the oil into an air-tight container. Apply this oil generously, once a week, to experience improved results.

Delays premature greying

Nutritional deficiencies, stress, medical ailments or even genetics can lead to premature greying of hair. Onion Oil contains certain enzymes that can help prevent free radicals from damaging your hair, which in turn helps darken the hair and restore it to its original colour/shade.

DIY Remedy 2: In a bowl, add 2-3 tbsps. of Onion Juice, 1 tbsp. of Lemon Juice and 1 tbsp. of Olive Oil. Mix well and gently massage onto the scalp in a circular motion. Leave to rest for 30 minutes. Wash it off with a mild hair cleanser.

Acts as an anti-dandruff agent

The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of Onion Oil help treat dandruff and ward off any scalp infections present in the roots of the hair. The bioactive compounds in Onion Oil help nourish follicles, reduce breakage, and add volume to hair from the root to the tips. (3)

DIY Remedy 3: Boil two freshly-cut Beetroots in a pot. Let them cool and then smash them to form a paste. Pour this paste into a bowl and add 1 tbsp. of Onion Juice to the mix. Gently massage onto the scalp in a circular motion and leave it overnight to rest. Wash it off the next morning, using a mild SLS/SLES-free hair cleanser.

Lends lustre and softness to the hair

The antioxidants and flavonoids in Onions increase the scalp’s blood circulation levels which in turn help volumise and add shine to the tresses. Onion hair oil benefits as it also de-frizzes the tresses and helps deeply condition them as well. (4)

DIY Remedy 4: Peel 2-3 large Red Onions and chop them roughly into 4-5 small chunks. Add these chunks into a blender and whizz them nicely to form a semi-fine paste. Take the paste into a fine, muslin cloth and squeeze all the juice out in a bowl. To this, add 1 tbsp. of Organic Honey and 1 tsp. of fresh Lime Juice, and stir well until the mixture emulsifies. Apply this mix using a cotton pad on the scalp and let it sit for 20-30 minutes. Wash it off with a gentle hair cleanser of your choice and follow with a conditioner.

Can be used as a natural conditioner

Using a conditioner or a moisture-sealing agent before washing your hair ensures that shampoo doesn’t strip off its natural moisture. Regular massage using Onion Oil benefits for hair as it helps nurture the scalp and condition the hair – making it more nourished.

DIY Remedy 5: In a bowl, thoroughly whisk 1 whole Egg with 1 tbsp. of Onion Juice. Apply this mixture generously onto the scalp, all the way down through the length of your hair. Wear a shower cap and let the hair rest for at least 20-30 minutes. Rinse your hair well with cold water and a gentle Sulphate-free hair cleanser.
