Benefits of Sandalwood For Your Skincare Regime

Published on:

Santalum album or Sandalwood commonly known in India as Chandan is renowned for its aromatic and skincare properties. In ancient texts, it plays an important role in one’s overall summer skincare regime.

Ayurveda mentions specific diet, lifestyle and skincare regime for different seasons. As Summer is a Pitta (heat or fire element) governing season, it is suggested to apply a lot of cooling, hydrating, healing and nurturing foods, herbs, and spices through Ayurvedic beauty products and lifestyle choices.

As per Ayurveda, Skin care in summer is incomplete without the incorporation of Sandalwood, whether it comes to managing Pitta related disorders or managing the effects of harsh sun rays of Summer on skin.

Because of its light and dry physical properties (i.e. Laghu & Ruksha Guna) and cold potency (Sheet Virya), fresh Sandalwood paste works brilliantly on skin related issues like pigmentation, sunburn, acne and skin that lacks luster due to the sweltering heat and an incessant demand for water by the body.

In skin care, Sandalwood is used in many forms – including fresh pastes, powder and essential oils.

How To Use Sandalwood As Per Skin Concerns

Sandalwood for Dry Skin

For Vata skin, which is predominantly normal to dry, flaky, wrinkle prone and rough – Sandalwood essential oil works miraculously well due to its lubricating and nourishing properties. It is an excellent option for Vata skin type as it has the dual benefit of not only improving skin imbalances but also in helping soothe anxiety and sleeplessness, when infused in skincare products for dry skin.

Sandalwood for Blemishes, Pigmentation & Tanning

For Pitta skin which is typically sensitive and prone to pigmentation, tanning, blemishes and sunburn, Ubtans or natural cleansers containing Sandalwood powder are best to use. They can be mixed with pure Rose water or milk and applied on affected areas of the skin regularly. Alternatively, Turmeric can be added for application on acne.

Sandalwood for Acne & Enlarged Pores

For Kapha – which is skin that is primarily moist and prone to acne and large pores, a mask prepared with a Sandalwood Ubtan such as Narangi and Nagkesar by Forest Essentials can be mixed with yogurt for application on the skin. The astringent and antiseptic properties of Sandalwood clear the skin of excess moisture and acne, making it a key ingredient to look for in skin care products for oily skin.
